Water travels along joists, wicks up through drywall and hides under flooring, so the stain you can see is often much smaller than the damage you can't. Catching it early saves time, money and a lot of stress. These are five signs worth checking in your home.
1. Musty Odours That Won't Go Away
A damp, earthy smell in a basement, closet or cabinet usually means moisture is trapped somewhere nearby. If the smell returns after cleaning or airing the room out, the source is probably behind a wall or under a floor.
2. Stains, Bubbling Paint or Peeling Wallpaper
Yellow or brown rings on ceilings, paint that bubbles, or wallpaper that lifts at the seams all point to moisture moving through the surface. Press gently on the area: drywall that feels soft or crumbly has been wet for a while.
3. Warped, Cupped or Spongy Floors
Hardwood that cups, laminate that swells at the edges, or a floor that feels soft underfoot can mean water is sitting in the subfloor. Check around dishwashers, washing machines, tubs and toilets, where slow leaks are common.
4. Rising Water Bills or the Sound of Running Water
If your water bill climbs for no clear reason, or you hear water running when everything is off, you may have a hidden pipe leak. Many homeowners find leaks this way before any visible damage shows up.
5. Visible Mould or Condensation
Dark spots on walls or ceilings, or constant condensation on windows and cold pipes, suggest humidity is higher than it should be. Mould can start growing on damp surfaces within a day or two, so it is best to act quickly.
If you notice any of these signs, take photos and call a professional for a moisture check. Finding the source early is the best way to keep repairs small.
